This mixed use urban rejuvenation project occupies an entire city block on the southern fringe of the Johannesburg CBD. Designed to respond to existing movement patterns, everyday economic requirements, integration of the open space network and efficient phasing of construction, Stimela Square offers vibrant public space combining A-grade office, retail and hotel facilities. The buildings are clustered about a landscaped green corridor and market square in a configuration and architectural language which promotes legibility, contextual response and iconic urban renewal.

hotel in benin
In design stage is a new 5 star 200 bed hotel located in Cotonou, Benin.
Embodied in the design are fundamental sustainability strategies
through the following design concepts
Parasol Roof
• over-sailing parasol roofs to each component/solid rc roof below
• influenced by traditional west African building forms as a means of providing effective shading and channelling the air in order to cool the structures beneath
• reducing thermal gains leads to a reduction in energy consumption
Brise-Soleil
• south side of the building/sun shines/sheltered by open-able shutters - protecting the facade from heat gain
• the shutters allow for variable day lighting conditions in the hotel rooms and filter the air when cross ventilation is employed
Water Strategy
• over-sailing parasols allow for maximum area for rainwater
• harvesting potential
• rainwater is collected and stored to be used to irrigate the
planting/maintenance and cleaning of the hotel facilities
• heat pumps efficiently heating water will be used for showers throughout the hotel
• energy required in heating the water will drastically reduce the electricity requirements of the hotel
Ventilation Strategy
• employ passive systems to improve thermal conditions and reduce energy dependency
• cross ventilation – the ground floor remains open, with pivoting screens to provide shelter, the building itself acts as a parasol to the ground floor public facilities
• single loaded room layout provides opportunity for limited ac hotel rooms have large open-able windows on both sides of the floor plate
